Semax and Selank: Russia's Cognitive and Anxiolytic Peptides Explained

By Samir Levin · June 8, 2026 · 5 min read

Semax and Selank are two peptides developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. They are approved pharmaceuticals in Russia and Ukraine — not research chemicals in those markets, but actual prescription drugs with clinical evidence. In the West, they occupy the regulatory gray zone.

They have distinct mechanisms and distinct applications, but they share an unusually clean safety profile compared to other cognitive and anxiolytic compounds. Understanding how they differ determines which one fits your goal.

Semax: The ACTH Analog

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the sequence of ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone). It consists of the 4-10 fragment of ACTH with an added proline-glycine-proline (PGP) sequence that extends its stability and modifies its receptor profile.

Primary mechanisms:

Clinical applications (Russia/Ukraine approved):
Stroke rehabilitation, TBI recovery, optic nerve atrophy, ADHD, memory impairment

Biohacking application:
Cognitive enhancement, focus, learning and memory consolidation, recovery from cognitive overload or brain fog

Dosing:
200–600mcg intranasally (drops or spray), 1–2 times daily
Cycle: 10–14 days on, 7–10 days off
Available as 1% solution (1mg/mL) from Russian and Ukrainian pharmacies or as lyophilized powder for reconstitution

Selank: The Tuftsin Analog

Selank is a synthetic hexapeptide based on tuftsin, an endogenous tetrapeptide derived from immunoglobulin G. Tuftsin has known immunomodulatory and anxiolytic properties. Selank adds three additional amino acids (Gly-Pro-Pro) that stabilize it and modify its activity profile.

Primary mechanisms:

Biohacking application:
Anxiety reduction, stress management, sleep quality improvement, social anxiety, cognitive performance under stress (Selank produces the paradoxical combination of relaxation and mental clarity)

Dosing:
250–500mcg intranasally, 1–2 times daily
Can be used as needed (pre-performance anxiety) or on a cycle
Unlike benzodiazepines, Selank does not produce tolerance — it can be used continuously, though cycles are still preferred

Stacking

Semax and Selank are frequently stacked — Semax for cognitive upregulation, Selank for anxiolytic modulation. The combination produces heightened focus without the anxiety that some users experience with Semax alone at higher doses (particularly individuals sensitive to dopaminergic stimulation).

Selank is also a natural partner for performance-anxiety situations: public speaking, high-stakes presentations, examinations. 250–500mcg intranasal 30–45 minutes before the event produces measurable anxiety reduction without the cognitive blunting of benzodiazepines or the performance impairment of alcohol.
